💰 Tip Calculator
Calculate tip by service quality, split bills equally or by custom amounts, and detect if your bill already has a service charge — instantly as you type.
Free Tip Calculator for India — Every Feature You Need
MyQuickTool's Tip Calculator is the most complete free tip and bill-splitting tool built specifically for Indian users. It covers service quality suggestions using an emoji selector, quick tip buttons, equal and custom bill splitting, a service charge detector, and round-up options — all updating instantly as you type, with Indian Rupee formatting.
Tip by Service Quality — The Emoji Selector
Not sure how much to tip? Use the emoji service quality selector: tap the face that matches your experience — 😞 Poor (5%), 😐 Average (10%), 🙂 Good (15%), 😊 Great (20%), or 🤩 Excellent (25%). The tip percentage fills automatically and results update instantly. You can always override by typing any custom percentage.
India Tipping Scenarios
- 🍽️ Restaurant — 10–15% at mid-range and fine dining; ₹20–₹50 cash at dhabas and local eateries
- 🚗 Cab / Auto — 5–10% on Ola/Uber; rounding up the fare is common for autos
- 💇 Salon / Spa — 10–15% for the stylist; optional for trainees and assistants
- 🛵 Food Delivery — ₹20–₹50 per order on Swiggy/Zomato; 5% for large orders
- 🏨 Hotel — ₹50–₹200 for bellhop, housekeeping; 10–15% for in-room dining
Equal Bill Split with Slider
Drag the slider from 2 to 20 people to split the bill equally. Each person's exact bill share, tip share, and total to pay update live. The round-up buttons (₹1, ₹5, ₹10, ₹50, ₹100) let you round up each person's share to a clean number — eliminating the awkward "who has a ₹7 coin?" problem. The extra amount rounds up to more tip for the staff.
Custom Split — Different Amounts Per Person
The most unique feature on this page and rare across all online tip calculators: Custom Split. When different people ordered different amounts, an equal split is unfair. Enter each person's actual bill share, and the calculator distributes the tip proportionally — so the person who ordered the ₹500 main pays proportionally more tip than someone who had just a ₹150 soup. Add as many people as needed with the + Add Person button.
Service Charge Detector — India Specific
Many Indian restaurants add 5–10% as a service charge to your bill. Customers often then tip on the full bill, accidentally tipping on the service charge too. Check "Bill includes service charge?" and enter the percentage — the calculator shows exactly how much service charge is already in your bill, and calculates your additional tip only on the net food amount. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has clarified that service charge is not mandatory — you may refuse it or choose to tip directly to the staff instead.
How Tip is Calculated
- Basic tip: Tip Amount = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100
- Total: Bill + Tip Amount
- Per person (equal split): Total ÷ Number of people
- Per person (custom split): Person's bill + (Person's bill ÷ Total bill × Total tip)
- With service charge: Net bill = Total bill ÷ (1 + SC%) — tip applied to net bill only
Frequently Asked Questions
How much tip should I leave at a restaurant in India?
At a mid-range or fine-dining restaurant in India, 10% is the standard tip for decent service. For good service, 15% is appreciated. For exceptional service, 20–25% is generous. At dhabas, street food stalls, or small local eateries, a cash tip of ₹20–₹50 is common and very meaningful for the staff. Use the emoji selector above to choose a tip that matches your experience.
What is the difference between tip and service charge?
A service charge is a fee added to the bill by the restaurant — typically 5–10% — and flows to the establishment, which distributes it per their own policy. A tip (gratuity) is a voluntary amount you give directly to reward the serving staff. The CCPA has clarified service charge is not mandatory and customers may refuse it. If your bill already includes a service charge, you can still tip the server directly with cash — which is often the better choice since it goes directly to them.
How do I split a bill unequally between friends?
Use the Custom Split tab in the calculator above. Enter each person's individual bill amount — what they actually ordered. The calculator automatically distributes the tip proportionally to each person's share, then shows their exact total. This is far fairer than equal split when one person ordered a ₹600 steak and another had a ₹150 soup. Click + Add Person to add more people as needed.
Is tipping mandatory in India?
No, tipping is entirely voluntary in India. There is no legal obligation to tip, and service charge on restaurant bills is also not compulsory — the CCPA has issued clear guidelines that restaurants cannot force customers to pay service charge. Tipping is a personal choice to reward good service and directly support the staff who served you. That said, for delivery riders, housekeeping staff, and salon workers, even a small tip makes a meaningful difference to their income.
How do I calculate tip when the bill already has a service charge?
Tick the "Bill includes service charge?" checkbox in the calculator and enter the service charge percentage shown on your bill (commonly 10%). The calculator back-calculates the net food bill, displays the service charge amount already included, and computes your additional tip on the net bill only — so you never accidentally tip on the service charge amount. The breakdown is shown clearly so you know exactly what you're paying.
